Application Deadline: 15 June 2017 Rotary and the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education have teamed up to tackle the world’s water and sanitation crisis by increasing the number of trained professionals to devise, plan, and implement solutions in developing and emerging countries. Through this partnership, The Rotary Foundation will provide grants to Rotary clubs and districts to select and sponsor a limited number of students each year.

Have been designed to promote long-term productive relationships between Rotarians and highly skilled water and sanitation professionals in their communities. Rotary scholars will benefit from the support they receive through regular contact with sponsoring Rotarians from their home country and the opportunity to interact with Rotarians in the Netherlands. After graduating, scholars’ expertise will be put to work improving water and sanitation conditions in their own community with a project the scholar and sponsoring Rotarians will design and implement together. In addition, Rotary Foundation alumni are part of an extensive network of fellow Rotary scholarship recipients and Rotarians worldwide.

The Programme includes practical thesis work in developing countries. The new MSc programme is dedicated to targeting needs and delivering specialists with the necessary qualifications, in a short time,. It aims to attract talented and ambitious young and mid-career sanitation professionals (with a BSc degree), working in water supply and sewerage companies, municipal assemblies, government ministries, NGOs and consulting companies.

Ideally these individuals are dealing with urban and peri-urban sanitation, especially in informal settlements, and need a broad orientation to become a sanitation expert so they can plan and implement projects and sanitation programmes worldwide. Given the global mission of IHE Delft, regional relevance of partner universities, and the close cooperation with the BMGF and its focus on professionals from South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, the new programme is aiming at applicants from those regions. Fifteen top talents will be admitted to the first edition of the MSc in Sanitation (academic cohort 2018-2019) and will receive a scholarship.

The fellowships will cover all costs - tuition, living, administration, insurances, travel and research costs. In the subsequent editions, starting from the class 2019-2020, the programme will be open to more students (up to 50) and funding, beyond the scholarships provided by the BMGF, will be necessary.
